BUSINESS LAB · EVIDENCE BEFORE TACTICS
How do you track sales that close on WhatsApp from your ads?
Connect the enquiry source to an opportunity, order and payment record. Campaign references and tagged links can help identify a route, but they do not independently prove that advertising caused the sale. Keep platform attribution, customer-reported source and the business’s own sales record separate, then reconcile them using a consistent process.

- The team records messages but does not connect them to orders or collected payments.
- Several people or channels create duplicate records for the same buyer.
- The customer returns through a different route, so the final click loses the earlier context.
- A source label is overwritten or inferred later without recording that it is uncertain.
What evidence do you need?
For a defined period, record a non-sensitive reference, campaign or source, enquiry date, assigned owner, opportunity stage, order value and payment outcome. Use a consistent business identifier rather than copying conversation contents into public URLs. Track refunds and duplicate orders. Ask a short source question when useful, and keep the answer labelled as self-reported.
A limited first test
Choose one campaign and a manageable set of enquiries. Agree who creates the record, who updates the outcome and how duplicates are reconciled. Compare the enquiry list with completed orders and payments at a regular review. Fix missing links before installing more dashboards. Do not collect extra customer information simply because a tool can store it.
How to decide what happens next
Use the reconciled record to understand where opportunities are lost and which recorded sources are associated with valuable sales. Treat unlinked sales as unknown rather than forcing an attribution. If you later add analytics or customer-data integrations, agree on the purpose and configuration first; this guide does not activate new tracking on your website.

Source tagging resource
Google’s campaign URL guidance explains campaign parameters. Labels help organize sources; they do not establish incrementality or replace an order-and-payment record.
Frequently asked questions
Do UTM tags prove that an ad caused a sale?
No. Tags label a traffic source. Causal impact and the allocation of credit are separate questions.
Can I track sales with a spreadsheet?
A consistent, controlled record can be a useful starting point. Access, duplication and responsibility still need to be managed.
Should I paste customer details into a tracking URL?
Use campaign labels and non-sensitive references. Avoid exposing private customer information in URLs.
